Pilatus PC12 – The “Swiss Army Knife” of aviation!

Since its debut in 1991 the PC 12 has gained an enviable reputation as a versatile and safe high-performance aircraft.

It was designed as a utility aircraft incorporating a large aft cargo door in addition to the main passenger door. Due to its highly efficient design and low operating cost the PC-12 is used by a large variety of operators. Although the main use of the aircraft is corporate transportation, it is also used by small regional airlines, air-ambulance operators and government agencies such as police forces, border patrols and armed forces.

The PC-12 has been highly successful with over 2,000 deliveries made as of May 2023.

Due to its short take-off and landing (STOL) ability the PC12 can operate from smaller airfields and grass strips. Its robust undercarriage allows it top operate from gravel and other unprepared surfaces.

Over time the PC12 evolved into 3 versions, all equipped with a 3-axis autopilot system as standard. The original (or classic) version introduced in 1991 had a traditional cockpit layout but with an EFIS and digital engine display, Pilatus being one of the earliest advocates of digital instruments.

Pilatus announced the PC-12NG (Next Generation) in 2006. The NG has a more powerful PT6A-67P engine with better climb performance and increased cruise speed. The NG also features a Honeywell Primus Apex glass cockpit. The revised cockpit includes automatic pressurization control as well as cursor-controlled inputs to the navigation system.

The latest version, the PC-12NGX launched in 2019. Its PT6E-67XP engine has a full-authority digital engine control (FADEC) and a low-speed propeller mode to reduce cabin noise. The updated Honeywell avionics controls an autothrottle and has a cursor control device. For the first time touchscreens are used. The cabin windows are also 10% larger than previous models.

The PC12 is very popular in Africa with operators in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and beyond so PC12 Pilots are in very high demand. Accordingly, Simuflight has decided to add a PC12 flight simulator training device at their facility in Midrand. The design is substantially complete with manufacturing and assembly to follow. The finished Simulator is expected to be commissioned in 2025.
